philosophy of mathematics suited well the ‘‘general emphasisin later nineteenth-century mathematics on revisiting foundationalquestions’’ (p. 61). Pure geometry as it emerged from Frege, Paschand Hilbert, provided a diagram-free, purely sentential notion ofproof, which has lasted unto our own day.In the second, and greater, part of the book, Greaves traces outthe interrelations between philosophy, most especially metaphysics, and logic. Again, he begins with the ancients. To my mind, Greaves’very concise presentation of the connections, both structural anddevelopmental, among Aristotle’s logic, metaphysics, and science isthe most elegant version of the task I have ever seen. That alone iswell worth the book’s price.A major reason that diagrams did not figure until relatively late inthe career of syllogistic logic lies in the fact that ‘‘Aristotle developedthe syllogistic in support of a specific conception about the scope anduses to which logic would be put, and that this conception naturallyentails that sentences of a certain limited grammatical form be theprincipal targets of the theory’’ (p. 88). That is, given Aristotle’smetaphysics – especially the view of the relation between predicationand properties from the Categories – and his view of what a science is,syllogistic can have only the form it does have, namely, categorical–sentential.Because of these Aristotelian intentions, aside from some earlyoddities such as the efforts of Lull and Bruno, serious use of diagramsfor reasoning (rather than just depiction) did not occur until Eulerand the rise of extensional logic. As Greaves presents the case, it wasEuler’s decision to let his circles represent extension rather than thetraditional intension of the terms that would ‘‘make possible an en-tirely new sort of diagram type for logic, characterized by the use ofregions to represent concepts’’ (p. 122).Neither Euler’s diagrams (which had only limited power) nor hisextensional interpretation made much of a dent in logic at the time. However, ‘‘by the time of Boole and Venn, it is clear that a signifi-cant, although comparatively small, group of logicians had embracedan extensional, class-based interpretation of the component conceptsin a categorical proposition’’ (p. 127).Greaves’ discussion of developments in logic during the nineteenthcentury is delightfully economical. He covers, in turn, the develop-ment of Boole’s symbolic logic, emphasising the expansions that itmade in ‘‘Aristotle’s vision of the scope of logic along two maindimensions’’, namely the expansion of types of propositional forms221DEEP THOUGHTS ABOUT DIAGRAMS

The Automated Turing test (ATT) is almost a standard security technique for addressing the threat of undesirable or malicious bot programs. In this paper, we motivate an interesting adversary model, cyborgs, which are either humans assisted by bots or bots assisted by humans. Since there is always a human behind these bots, or a human can always be available on demand, ATT fails to differentiat...

Intelligence-Augmented Rat Cyborgs in Maze Solving

Cyborg intelligence is an emerging kind of intelligence paradigm. It aims to deeply integrate machine intelligence with biological intelligence by connecting machines and living beings via neural interfaces, enhancing strength by combining the biological cognition capability with the machine computational capability. Cyborg intelligence is considered to be a new way to augment living beings wit...

Automatic Training of Rat Cyborgs for Navigation

A rat cyborg system refers to a biological rat implanted with microelectrodes in its brain, via which the outer electrical stimuli can be delivered into the brain in vivo to control its behaviors. Rat cyborgs have various applications in emergency, such as search and rescue in disasters. Prior to a rat cyborg becoming controllable, a lot of effort is required to train it to adapt to the electri...

For decades, scientists and engineers have been fascinated by cybernetic organisms, or cyborgs, that fuse artificial and natural systems. Cyborgs enable harnessing biological systems that have been honed by evolutionary forces over millennia to achieve astounding feats. Male moths can detect a single pheromone molecule, a sensitivity of roughly 10 grams. Thus, cyborgs can perform tasks at scale...

Artificial Identity: Representations of Robots and Cyborgs in Contemporary Anglo-American Science Fiction Films By Em

The ‘human condition’ has traditionally been an area of study addressed primarily by philosophers concerned with the mind/body problem, rather than studied as a neuroscientific conundrum. However, contemporary developments in science and technology that afford us a greater knowledge of the human brain have resulted in an increased scientific focus on consciousness, emotion and personhood. This ...

Engenderneered Machines in Science Fiction Film

The fear that human creations might backfire and attack their creators has been a mainstay of science fiction at least since Mary Shelley‟s Frankenstein. The misgivings become particularly acute when human-engineered imitations of human beings (i.e., robots and cyborgs) raise questions regarding how humans can be distinguished from machines. Assumptions about gender also infuse the ways humans ...
